Castlegar Trish Vroom

Because of its strategic location at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers, Castlegar has been settled far longer than most Kootenay towns; first by the Sinixt and Ktunaxa First Nations, then by prospectors in the era of the mining booms, then Doukhobors came to farm the rich soil that had been deposited in the valley over the eons by the wide rivers.

As a place to stay on a West Kootenay vacation, it’s more than strategic. Not only can you get to some amazing outdoor playgrounds within an hour’s drive or less, the town of just under 9,000 friendly people has lots to offer. Visit the regional arts museum, Kootenay Gallery; stroll Sculpturewalk on your way to dinner. There are several fascinating historical sites, including the Doukhobor Discovery Centre and the historic Brilliant Bridge. Two golf courses will challenge you and the sweep and majesty of the rivers will take your breath away, whether you are a fisherman or not. Come to Castlegar for an adventure and stay for the culture. Or do it the other way ’round. It’s all there, waiting for you.
