Forty km (25 miles) north of Kaslo is the beautiful Lardeau Valley which embraces the small communities of Lardeau, Cooper Creek and Meadow Creek, Howser, Argenta and Johnsons Landing. The rich valley bottom farmland is the result of the ebb and flow over thousands of years by the Duncan and Lardeau Rivers through the flats at the head of the lake.
The area was first settled at the turn of the last century when a flood of prospectors searching for rich lodes of ore invaded the area....

Celebrate with the villagers of Kaslo the tradition they have kept alive since 1892.
During all these years, the locals have celebrated Queen Victoria’s birthday with a rollicking spring festival. In the old days the sternwheelers ran excursion trips from Nelson and stopped to pick up revellers at every point along the way, while others arrived in every type of boat and conveyance, filling the streets of Kaslo with miners, prospectors and their families. The main...
Less than 5 minutes’ drive north from Ainsworth is Woodbury Resort and Marina and Jones Boys Boats. The early history of Woodbury is inextricably linked with mining. In 1897, Woodbury Creek was the site of a mining boom. Prospectors staked and then worked their claims all along the creek for kilometres up into the mountains. And as with other communities, the boom didn’t last, mining declined and the prospectors eventually went elsewhere.
Today,...
The Langham, initially constructed as a hotel in 1896, later became a bank, a bottling company, and an internment centre for Japanese-Canadians during World War II.
Left to time and the elements, by the mid 1970s the building was considered a fire hazard and was in danger of being demolished. In 1974 a small group of Kaslo residents got together to form the Langham Cultural Society. After massive efforts to refurbish the building, the first floor was opened in 1977. The...
You will virtually “see red” as this 11 m wide by 3.2 km channel comes alive with a million spawning kokanee (land-locked salmon) during the months of August and September.
These channels were built in 1967 to replace the natural spawning beds destroyed by the construction of the Duncan Dam. Walkways and an interpretive site allow visitors the opportunity to view this incredible and spectacular wonder of nature.
Occasionally black bears may be seen in and around the...

For nearly 60 years, sternwheelers provided a transportation lifeline to the many isolated communities on Kootenay Lake. The SS Moyie and her sister ships literally opened the Kootenay region to miners, businesses, farmers and pioneer families. When she was launched on October 22, 1898, there were no roads, no trains, or air travel into these remote mountain valleys. The ships were the only means of mass transportation, freight and mail service. And so they came –...
