Trail
The city of Trail, with a population today of 7,696, was founded in the 1890s when a small smelter was constructed on a bench above the Columbia River to serve the rich mines of Rossland. This smelter evolved to what is now known as Teck Cominco, a successful worldwide mining company.
Over the years, Trail has become home to a large number of Italian immigrants who have contributed to the city's distinctive character. Trail is very proud of its Italian heritage. In May each year, "Silver City Days", celebrates the mining and pioneer traditions of the area.
Citizens of Trail have always been active in sports and have brought many British Columbia, Canadian and even World titles back to their region. Hockey, skiing, curling, track and field and baseball have provided the greatest number of successes. Recreational facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports are extensive! The 'Home of Champions' monument downtown recognizes the importance Trail places on excellence in sport.
Visit The Sports Hall of Fame located in the Trail Memorial Centre for a look at some memorabilia from the famous Trail Smoke Eaters hockey club.
If history is your thing, continue on to the Trail Museum (also located in the Centre) where you'll find, among other things, a collection of Interior Salish native artifacts. Another interesting stop is at Teck Cominco's new Interpretive Centre, located right downtown.
Want to shop? Try downtown Trail, the East Trail shopping district or the Waneta Plaza Mall for a variety of merchandise and services.
DADTrail and area has a fascinating history, strong culture, and beautiful scenery. There is a wealth of activities sure to make your visit a memorable one. For more information find Trail on the web at www.cityoftrail.com.
