Silverton “the Beautiful” was first settled in 1892 by miners working the south face of Idaho Mountain, extracting the rich deposits of lead and silver. By the late 1890s the town had six hotels, three general stores, a newspaper, a school and telephone connections to the mines in New Denver and Sandon. Silverton feels a bit smaller than that now, and in fact it is the second smallest municipality in BC.

In 2011 there 195 residents, and in a remarkable instance of Steady Eddy, when the census rolled around again in 2016 there were still 195 people. But apparently not exactly the same ones. It seems that if you’re going to move away from this beautiful village, it’s incumbent on you to find your replacement first. At least, that’s the scuttlebutt.
