The “Hub of the Kootenays” is Salmo, a laid-back village at the junction of two main highways. There are some unique features that set this town apart from other Kootenay towns. Stroll the downtown and check out the stone murals, which rely solely on the stones’ natural colours, varying from silver to red, to intricately portray scenes from the time when the area was first settled. Salmo also boasts an outdoor swimming pool, a community centre that bustles with people enjoying a wide array of programs and activities, and an interesting museum. You will really get a feel for the village and how it became what it is today if you fist visit this museum. There are exhibits of mining artifacts, photographs and maps of the Dewdney Trail, as well as other unique articles.

The Salmo/Ymir area has many exceptional forest based recreation opportunities. The logging roads that have been carved into the mountains provide access into the backcountry for snowmobiling and cross country skiing. And of course there is Salmo’s pride: its very own ski hill with 5 runs and lighted night skiing that has been operated by volunteers in the community since 1962.
